This doctoral dissertation aims to develop a new university library model that re sponds to changes in the educational processes of third generation universities (3GU). In the first place, a historical review of “library” concept is carried out, see king to specify its identity from its origins to the present day. Next, a description of the functioning of the current university library is carried out and the challenges that arise because of higher education changes are studied. A theoretical-practical survey of knowledge management and governance processes will serve to lay the foundations for the new library model, focused not only on the bibliographic collec tion and on providing information, but mainly oriented towards learning processes. The university library as a central knowledge management laboratory will be cha racterized as a community, aligned with the institutional strategy, which fosters the development of interactions that make it possible for information to be transformed into new skills and knowledge, thus contributing to the educational mission of the university to which it belongsen
