| spa |
dc.description.abstract | The Intercultural Sensitivity (IS) is the ability to discriminate and acknowledge cultural differences in order understand other worldviews. We use the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) to identify the orientation of towards cultural differences and elements of the cultural psychology of the semiotic dynamics to explore the developmental process of the IS. Using a simple case study and through a Historically Structured Sampling (HSS) we selected two participants for this study. We conducted interviews related to their semester abroad experience and their perception of cultural differences. We used Trajectory Equifinality Model (TEM) to analyze the data obtained and elaborate the trajectories followed towards an ethnorelative orientation. The results suggest that students experienced moments of ruptures related to the otherness experience and the differences between expectations and reality lived at the beginning of the semester abroad. We identify the symbolic resources that oriented the participants towards a more significant interactions and the acknowledgement of other worldviews, particularly, the perception of the semester abroad as timed experience and the persistent intention to learn new things. However, it was not possible to identify a specific position in the DMIS that reflects the attitudes shown by the participants in their interviews towards the difference, since we could identify some ethnocentric and ethnorelative elements. | eng |
