Incidence of drug related problems of antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV in hospitalized patients in the Hospital Santa Clara, Bogotá D.C.

Abstract

Introduction: Antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus is a therapeutic strategy related to multiple drug related problems which cause or can cause the appearance of a negative result associated with medication, so it is important to identify their incidence, characterize and classify them to create strategies to minimize their impact on health of the patients infected with the virus. Objective: To estimate the global incidence and the incidence of each one of the drug related problems of antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of the infection by human immunodeficiency virus in a cohort of hospitalized patients in Bogotá D.C., Colombia. Materials and methods: Descriptive retrospective cohort study, which included patients, aged ≥ 18 years with diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus infection with antiretroviral treatment, hospitalized between 01/JAN/2015 and 31/DEC/2016 at Santa Clara Hospital, Bogotá D.C. Results: The overall incidence of antiretroviral drug related problems was 0.90 (95% CI 0,85 - 0,93). The incidence of drug-drug interactions was 0,85 (95% CI 0,80-0,90), 0,28 (95% CI 0,22-0,35) for adverse reactions and 0,12 (CI 95% 0,08-0,17) for prescription error. Conclusion: Drug related problems deserve study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Their knowledge can enable health care professionals to anticipate their appearance, reduce their incidence, implement risk management plans and optimize adherence to antiretroviral treatment. © 2019, Instituto Nacional de Salud.
