dc.description.abstractLa Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estima que actualmente hay cerca de 605 millones de personas con más de 60 años; esta cifra se duplicará en 2025 y llegará a los 2000 millones en 2050. Se proyecta que en el mismo año, el 22 % de los habitantes del mundo tendrá más de 60 años y que 400 millones de personas superarán los 80 años (World Health Organization, 2018). Las demencias son una de las principales causas de discapacidad en la vejez (deLima Thomas, Sanchez-Reilly, et al., 2018). Se estima que hoy existen 46,8 millones de personas que padecen algún tipo de demencia en el mundo. Las proyecciones indican que esta cifra se duplicará cada 20 años, llegando a los 74,7 millones en 2030 y los 131,5 millones en 2050. A nivel regional, se estima que en el continente americano existirían 9,4 millones de pacientes con demencia. El costo estimado del cuidado de las demencias en el planeta para 2018 es de un trillón de dólares, y para 2030 será de dos trillones de dólares (World Health Organization, 2018). Las voluntades anticipadas como expresión de la autonomía son un emblema de nuestra época cuyo ejercicio, en el caso particular de las demencias, es problemático por muchas razones.es_CO
