Reflections on Victim-Centered Accountability in Ukraine

Abstract

One year following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there has been a noticeable lack of attention given to the pressing needs of the victims affected by this armed conflict. While there have been numerous suggestions for investigating, prosecuting, and punishing the grave offenses committed during the invasion, it is equally crucial to take action toward repairing the damage inflicted upon innocent civilians and setting the stage for future peacebuilding endeavors within the nation. Taking these factors into account, this article delves into the realm of transitional justice, exploring successful methods and key lessons that could serve to aid in efforts to compensate and support the victims, despite the ongoing conflict.

Un año después de la invasión rusa a Ucrania existen pocos debates en torno a las necesidades de las víctimas que este conflicto armado ha cobrado. Además de las diferentes propuestas para investigar, juzgar y sancionar los graves crímenes cometidos en el marco de la invasión, es necesario implementar medidas que puedan atender el daño causado a la población civil y sentar las bases para futuros esfuerzos de construcción de paz en el país. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, el presente artículo examina algunas buenas prácticas y lecciones aprendidas en el campo de la justicia transicional y la forma en que estas podrían contribuir a impulsar iniciativas para resarcir a las víctimas, incluso mientras el conflicto sigue en curso.
