Vernacular Photography: Towardsa Synthetic Elementary Definition

Abstract

Through a literature/newspaper inquiry, this research seeks to answer the question: How to offer a synthetic elementary definition of Vernacular Pho-tography that includes commonalities in concepts by specialized authors, galleries, and museums interested in this iconographic genre? Twenty-five definitions of Vernacular Photography were analyzed to answer this ques-tion, choosing 13 from the last ten years that were issued by prestigious academics interested in this genre, such as Geoffrey Batchen and Clément Chéroux, or institutions with Vernacular Photography collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the Swann Galleries. Stud-ying these definitions has allowed us to find convergent and divergent ele-ments to propose an integrating defining concept. The conclusions section highlights the challenges of finding a synthetic elementary definition of Ver-nacular Photography.

La presente investigación busca responder, a través de una indagación biblio y hemerográfica, la pregunta por cómo ofrecer una definición sintética y elemental de fotografía vernácula, que incluya los elementos comunes presentados en conceptos emanados de autores especializados, galerías y museos interesados por este género iconográfico. Para responder esta pregunta se analizaron 25 definiciones de fotografía vernácula y se escogieron finalmente 13, correspondientes a los últimos diez años, dadas por académicos de reconocido prestigio interesados en este género, como Geoffrey Batchen y Clément Chéroux, o instituciones con acervos de fotografía vernácula, como el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York o las Swann Galleries. El estudio de las definiciones ha permitido encontrar elementos convergentes y divergentes para poder proponer un concepto definitorio e integrador. En las conclusiones se ponen de relieve los retos que implica encontrar una definición sintética y elemental para la fotografía vernácula.
