%X Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze gaps and trends, as well suggest approaches and
methodologies that should be addressed by future studies for implementing the lean and green management
in the agri-food sector.
Design/methodology/approach – Based on a sample with 117 papers, this paper presents a systematic
review on the integration of lean and green in the agri-food sector.
Findings – Key findings indicate that research on lean and green topics has increased in recent years, an important
gap in the integration of lean and green in the agri-food sector has been identified. Two paths that remain open for
further research are detected: the lack of theoretical, prescriptive and quantitative research and the possibility of
integrating the two most used tools of lean (i.e. value stream mapping) and green (i.e. life-cycle assessment).
Practical implications – This study does not only advance the theoretical knowledge of the lean and green
field, but it is also beneficial for agri-food companies who aim to effectively deploy lean and green in their
processes in order to improve both operational and environmental performances.
Social implications – No other industry matches in such a complete way the agri-food industry’s challenge
of sustainability that is due to the amount of resources it consumes and its interrelatedness with the
well-being of humanity.
Originality/value – There are separate streams of established research on lean and green management in
the agri-food sector, yet very few authors have addressed the intersection of these strategic initiatives.

El propósito de este artículo es analizar brechas y tendencias, así como sugerir enfoques y metodologías que deberían ser abordados por futuros estudios para implementar la gestión lean y verde en el sector agroalimentario.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque
Basado en una muestra de 117 artículos, este artículo presenta una revisión sistemática sobre la integración de lean y green en el sector agroalimentario.

Recomendaciones
Los hallazgos clave indican que la investigación sobre temas lean y green ha aumentado en los últimos años, se ha identificado una brecha importante en la integración de lean y green en el sector agroalimentario. Se detectan dos caminos que permanecen abiertos para futuras investigaciones: la falta de investigación teórica, prescriptiva y cuantitativa y la posibilidad de integrar las dos herramientas más utilizadas de lean (es decir, mapeo de flujo de valor) y verde (es decir, evaluación del ciclo de vida).

Implicaciones prácticas
Este estudio no solo avanza en el conocimiento teórico del campo lean y green, sino que también es beneficioso para las empresas agroalimentarias que buscan implementar lean y green de manera efectiva en sus procesos para mejorar tanto el desempeño operativo como el ambiental.

Implicaciones sociales
Ninguna otra industria iguala de manera tan completa el desafío de la sostenibilidad de la industria agroalimentaria que se debe a la cantidad de recursos que consume y su interrelación con el bienestar de la humanidad.

Originalidad/valor
Hay corrientes separadas de investigación establecida sobre la gestión eficiente y ecológica en el sector agroalimentario, pero muy pocos autores han abordado la intersección de estas iniciativas estratégicas.
