Fostering Written Production of Review Texts among EFL University Students Through a Genre-Based Approach; Fomento de la producción escrita de textos de revisión entre estudiantes universitarios de inglés como lengua extranjera a través de un enfoque basado en el género
Duran, Diana Carolina
This study investigated the effects of a Genre-Based Approach (gba) on 54 par-ticipants’ abilities to write a review text of a mobile application or website while reflecting on the “evaluating a text” function embedded in the target genre. The participants belonged to a pre-intermediate (A2.2 cefr) efl course offered at a university in Bogotá, Colombia that has implemented a gba for over five years. The program recently adapted the teaching and learning cycle to give more prom-inence to the students’ active participation in the Joint Construction phase by including systematic peer feedback with the further purpose of giving learnersmore independence from the teacher. The study aimed to assess the effects of the implementation on participants’ written production and to explore their insights and awareness of the selected genre. Data were collected through students’ ar-tifacts, an online questionnaire, and focus groups, and were analyzed following a mixed-methods approach that incorporated grounded theory and descriptive statistics.

In foreign language instruction, students are often exposed to computer-mediated testing in international exams and language courses; however, regular classrooms are not equipped with computer labs to offer a lesson coherent with that testing procedure. To fill this gap, mobile-assisted language learning emerges as a portable option for computer-mediated learning and testing. Hence, this action research aims to study the implementation of mobile phones-assisted practice, combined with note-taking, as test-wise and test-management strategies, to tackle the needs of 218 participants who were taking an English as a foreign language program at a Colombian university. In the diagnostic stage, learners expressed that the most difficult computer-assessed skill was speaking, due to lack of confidence and suitable strategies.

This article reports a qualitative case study about the implementation of a translanguaging strategy with EFL learners belonging to the Language Learning Support programs at a private university, who struggled when speaking in English. In order to address this problem, this strategy aim to help participants to reflect and self-direct their oral performance development. Multimodal tools were used for learners to undertake a specific course of action to cope with their speaking difficulties. Data gathered from tutor's journals, student's e-portfolio and interviews, showed how confidence and self-regulation were fostered after including student's mother tongue and ICT tools. These findings suggest a need to expand this implementation with learners of different proficiency levels who also find it difficult to verbally express their ideas.

Inquiry as an opportunity to make things differently in the language classroom
Mendieta Aguilar, Jenny Alexandra
This article presents a pedagogical experience in a female private school in Bogotá with a group of seventh graders, where the English classes became an excuse to start posing questions about issues that affect young girls and women around the world, as it is women discrimination. The study was developed as an innovative pedagogical proposal and used literature as a means to foster students’ inquiry process. This process was made evident through data collection sources such as students’ artifacts, field notes and video-taped sessions. The data analysis revealed that the target language is not a barrier but a resource for students to wonder about the reality that surrounds them.
