%X CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) refers to different bilingual educational environments in which content is taught through a second language. Most of these environments take place at the secondary level, however, in Colombia, bilingual education has been implemented mostly since primary years creating a situation in which both L1 and L2 are learned and used as a medium of instruction, nevertheless, the use of the L1 to assist learning in a second language has always been a controversial topic as there is a premise that the L1 may interfere with the acquisition of the L2, and the only way to become proficient in the L2 is through exposures to the target language. The present study identifies how the mother tongue is used in the CLIL classroom to boost content and language acquisition through a second language, identifying different perceptions about its use and factors that may deter the implementation of the L1 as a learning strategy.
%X El termino CLIL se refiere a diferentes ambientes de educación bilingüe en los cuales el 
contenido de las asignaturas es enseñado a través de una segunda lengua. La mayoría de estos 
ambientes toman lugar en secundaria, sin embargo, en Colombia, la educación bilingüe ha sido 
implementada en su mayor parte desde primaria creando situaciones en las cuales tanto L1 y L2 
son usadas como medio de enseñanza, no obstante, el uso de la lengua materna como estrategia 
para asistir el aprendizaje de una segunda lengua es un tema controversial, ya que existe la 
premisa que el uso de la L1 puede interferir con la adquisición de la L2, y la única forma de 
adquirir un alto grado de competencia en una segunda lengua es a través de una gran exposición 
a la lengua extranjera. El presente estudio identifica como la lengua materna está siendo 
empleada en ambientes CLIL para estimular la adquisición de conocimientos a través de una segunda lengua, identificando diferentes percepciones sobre su uso y elementos que puedan 
impedir su aplicación como una estrategia de aprendizaje
