%X The article tracks the elements that in The Leviathan of Thomas Hobbes state the
role of religion in the modern State. Two interpretations would come off Hobbes’
work: the first one the State appears like a perfect machine that replaces the historical
and cultural role of the Church, specifically its hegemony on the public stage
and the exigency of loyalty to the individuals. In the second, State requires an absolute
and unquestionable sovereignty over the religious stage, and to achieve this, it
subordinates religion to civil power. Nevertheless, the two routes lead to the same
destiny: the prevalence of political power over the ecclesiastical or religious sphere,
in a complex relation that is sustained from modernity to our times.
%X El artículo rastrea los elementos que en el Leviatán de Thomas Hobbes precisan el
lugar de la religión en el Estado moderno. De la obra se desprenderían dos interpretaciones:
en la primera el Estado aparece como la máquina perfecta que sustituye
el papel histórico y cultural de la Iglesia, específicamente su hegemonía sobre el
ámbito público y la exigencia de lealtad a los individuos. En la segunda, el Estado
requiere una soberanía absoluta e incuestionable sobre el ámbito religioso, y para
ello subordina la cuestión religiosa al poder civil. Sin embargo, las dos vías conducen
al mismo destino: la prevalencia del poder político sobre la esfera eclesiástica o religiosa,
en una relación compleja que llega desde la modernidad hasta nuestros días.
