Nursing workload balancing: Lean healthcare, analytics and optimization in two Latin American University Hospitals
Jaimez Olarte, Cristian Andrey
In most Latin American hospitals, the workload assignment of healthcare workers is a crucial
process. These strategies seek to improve the level of patient care and safety while avoiding
incurring unnecessary costs by hiring and maintaining excessive staff. The distribution of
activities falls to the chief nurses in the hospital, taking as criteria for allocation the number
of patients rather than the complexity of care that each individual carries. Specifically for
the inpatient area and for nursing professionals, it is complex to determine an adequate
distribution of human resources, considering the diagnosis of the patients and the number
of tasks that a nursing professional must carry out throughout the day. Therefore, this work
proposes the development of a strategy and a load-balancing model based on lean healthcare
theory, analytics, and mathematical optimization, so that working hours do not result in
the generation of stress and the presence of burnout in nurses. Likewise, mathematical
modelling maximizes the use of the nursing staff’s capacity, generating awareness based
on the integration of continuous improvement theories so that the clinics can be updated to
technological trends. Finally, this project is part of a macro-project for the development of
technologies that support hospital nursing processes, carried out by the Universidad de La
Sabana Clinic in Colombia and the Universidad de los Andes Clinic in Chile, so the results

Influence of soil-structure interaction on the fragility curves of medium-height moment resisting frames and thin-walled buildings located in Bogotá, Colombia
Osorio Castellanos, Angie Viviana
Nowadays, Bogotá’s population accounts for 15% of the total Colombian population. The population influx the city has experienced has increased the construction of buildings in the past decades. Mid-rise buildings represent over 24% from the total building stock of the city and have been constructed mainly using reinforced concrete (RC) structural systems such as moment resisting frames and thin walls. The vulnerability of such systems has been studied and documented through fragility curves that are constructed based on structural analysis results and laboratory tests. The common practice among practicing engineers to carry on the structural analysis is assuming a fixed base building, which means that the structure is founded on rock or soils with a considerable strength, neglecting the displacements that can be produced due to the presence of the foundation and the soil beneath. Such assumption may lead to inaccurate results in the case of Bogotá where an important percentage of the foundation subgrade are soft clays with high compressibility and low bearing capacity. This type of soils has been proved to affect considerably the seismic performance of buildings during earthquakes. Therefore, this research studied the influence of the soil-structure interaction on structural analysis of RC moment resisting frames and thin walls mid-rise buildings founded on the soft soils area of Bogotá by means of dynamic analysis using OpenSees. Results showed that considering both the foundation and the soil, the stiffness and the system ductility reduce, and the fragility compared to the common fixed base approach increases

Modeling and solving the combined production scheduling and vehicle routing problem in flexible Job Shop production systems
Torres Tapia, William Fernando
Today, market behavior and globalization mean that end consumers are waiting for
their orders to be delivered very quickly. This context forces companies to have a high
availability of finished products or to improve their response capacity. For this reason,
the companies in the supply chains are obliged to implement strategies to meet this
customer need. One of the most efficient practices is the integration of production and
transportation activities decisions. In the literature, models for productions have been
found that have been integrated little with the transportation activities. Due to this,
the main objective of this project is to design solution strategies based on heuristic
and/or meta-heuristic procedures to solve the combined scheduling-routing problem
when the production stage is a Flexible Job Shop . In order to meet this objective, the
combined problem is characterized by identifying the main elements of each problem
individually and their interactions using a mathematical model. After this, sequential
and combined solution approaches based on meta-heuristic algorithms are presented.
